When we look back and remember, life seemed so much simpler when we were children. Going to school, coming home to a house that was free of the constant pull of social media – it was a different time. A time when we could escape the stress and sometimes bullying of our peers. We could feel safe, simply switch off, and immerse ourselves in shows like Little House on the Prairie and Brady Bunch (maybe I am dating some of our therapists with these shows). Life seemed so much simpler back then.
Today, it’s a different story. Kids face the same peer pressures and bullying, but it doesn’t stop at the school gate. It follows them home, invading their safe space. They continue to navigate the complexities and stresses of our rapidly changing world. Recent studies have noted a significant rise in mental health issues among younger children, more so than ever before. The impact of Covid has brought an increase in children reporting anxiety, school refusal, social conflicts with peers, and a decline in both physical and mental wellness. It’s a challenging landscape, not just for our kids, but for us as parents too.
As parents, we know how busy life can get – juggling work, managing household responsibilities, and the demands of parenting. And now, we’re navigating uncharted waters, trying to understand and support our children through these new and unfamiliar challenges. It’s tough, and it can sometimes leave us feeling overwhelmed. But you are not alone in this journey.
Child therapy is a uniquely tailored experience, just like each child we work with. As a centre dedicated to serving children and families, we recognize that children often require movement, creativity, play, a sense of security, and room for exploration within the therapeutic process. Our approach to child therapy is crafted to suit the individual needs of each child we are privileged to support.”
One of the pillars of our child therapy philosophy is the recognition that play is a fundamental language for children. Through play therapy, children can express themselves, process their emotions, and address their concerns in a manner that feels natural and enjoyable. Play therapy creates a safe and non-judgmental space where children can share their thoughts and feelings, often without the need for direct conversation.
In our approach to child therapy, we place great importance on movement and sensory experiences. Children are naturally active, so we encourage activities like art, movement therapy, and sensory play to help them express themselves in a healthy way. These activities allow children to connect with their emotions and bodies, helping them understand and manage their feelings better.
We also believe that involving families is really important in child therapy. Our therapists work closely with parents and caregivers to create a caring support system that focuses on the child’s well-being. We want to make sure the child feels safe and supported by everyone who takes care of them. It’s all about working together as a team to help the child.
Navigating the teenage years is quite a journey – it’s exciting, but it can also be challenging. There are lots of changes, self-discovery, and sometimes things can get a bit bumpy. Here at Mind 2 Heart Connections, we’re here to create a safe and caring place for your teenager.. We want to help them understand their feelings, become stronger, and learn how to do well in life.
One of the best ways to work towards this is to understand and help each teen to find and express their own unique perspective and voice by respecting and acknowledging this as important in their development. Our therapists specialize in helping to ensure that every teen feels genuinely understood and valued. We believe in open and honest dialogue, which empowers them to express themselves authentically and confidently. This not only creates a safe space but also encourages personal growth and well-being.
We also recognize that like the children we see, teens also often require a unique approach to help them regulate their emotions, identify their feelings and feel safe in our space. Movement, sensory, and teen play is important within our offices. We meet your teen where they are at, understanding age sometimes does not match their developmental needs. We can shift and adapt because we also recognize that these needs can move and shift even within a session.
Adolescence is a period of remarkable growth, where we witness the blossoming of abstract thinking and observe our bodies undergo rapid transformation. Amidst these changes, it’s not uncommon for teens to experience turbulence and intense emotions. Often, they seek guidance to navigate this challenging journey. For parents, this phase can be somewhat perplexing, as they’re accustomed to playing a central role in their children’s lives. However, part of a teenager’s development is to begin establishing independence by individuating, separating somewhat from their parents.
Therapy serves as a professional and empathetic environment for teenagers to foster personal growth, better understand themselves, and equip themselves with the essential tools to navigate the complexities of adolescence.
Whether your teenager is seeking an experienced therapist who can relate to their journey of self-identity and self-discovery within the LGBTQ2S+ community, exploring EMDR for childhood trauma, interested in understanding themselves better through expressive arts, or prefers virtual or in person sessions with caring therapists, we are here to meet those unique needs at Mind 2 Heart.
